Having a sense of purpose in life is essential for living a fulfilled and meaningful life. A purpose gives us direction and provides motivation to reach our goals. It can also help us stay focused and committed. Having a purpose in life can help us find meaning and fulfillment. Knowing our purpose can give us a sense of direction and help us stay on track. It can also help us make decisions, set goals, and stay engaged in our lives. A purpose can also help us maintain a positive attitude, which can improve our physical and mental health.

Finding your life purpose can feel like trying to navigate a maze in the dark. It’s easy to get lost in the idea that there’s only one specific “purpose” for our lives, and that we need to uncover it in order to be fulfilled and happy. But as Ralph Waldo Emerson (although this quote is attributed to many) once said,

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

The truth is, our lives are multi-faceted, and we can have multiple purposes or goals that bring us joy and meaning. In this article, we’ll explore some common mistakes, I noticed in time, that people make when searching for their life purpose and offer some unconventional tips on how to avoid these pitfalls. Why start with the pitfalls? Because many people in their adult life have given at least a thought to finding their purpose in life. As the journey is long, it is for most of us a lifetime exploration. I thought it might be valuable to be aware of the traps and challenges and recognize the ones we might have fallen for before. We will also begin, in this series of articles, to offer some practical tips on how to overcome them.

Not Taking Enough Time to Reflect

We live in a world where we’re constantly bombarded with information and distractions, and it can be hard to find the time and space to truly think about who we are and what we want. But, taking time to explore your interests, values, and strengths is crucial in discovering what truly aligns with your soul. So, make yourself a cup of tea, light a candle, and take a moment to journal, meditate, or talk to loved ones. Give yourself permission to slow down and savor the process. Do it regularly.

Focusing Too Much on External Validation.

We often define our life purpose based on what we think will impress others, rather than what truly aligns with our values and passions. But, as Carl Jung said,

The ultimate purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.”

Why spend your precious time and energy trying to impress people who don’t matter? Instead, focus on what sets your heart on fire. What brings you joy, even if it’s not considered “impressive” by societal standards? Remember, you’re the one who has to live with the choices you make, so make sure they’re ones that make you happy.

Believing There Is Only One Purpose for Our Lives

Some people think that there is only one specific “purpose” for their life, when in reality, there can be multiple purposes or goals that one may have over the course of their life. Don’t put pressure on yourself to have it all figured out. As the Buddha said,

“Your purpose in life is to find your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it.”

Your purpose and goals will evolve as you do. Embrace the journey and enjoy the ride.

Being Too Vague or Broad

Some people have a general idea of what they want their life purpose to be, but they don’t have a specific, actionable plan to make it happen. It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. But, by being specific and actionable, it becomes easier to achieve your goals and measure your progress. So, get specific and make a plan!

Not Being Open to Change

Life purpose can change over time, as we grow and evolve as individuals. It’s important to be open to re-evaluating and adjusting our purpose as we go through different stages of our lives. Embrace change as an opportunity to grow and evolve.

Finding your life purpose is a wild and wonderful journey. It requires self-reflection, exploration, and openness to change. By taking the time to reflect on yourself, setting specific and actionable goals, being open to change, and not comparing yourself to others, you can find a life purpose that aligns with your values and passions and brings you fulfillment and happiness.

Some Practical Tips

One way to make time for regular reflection is to schedule it in your calendar, just like you would any other important appointment. You can set aside a specific time each day, week, or month for self-reflection, whether it be in the morning, before bed, or during your lunch break.

Another way is to make it a habit by incorporating it into your daily routine. For example, you can make it a practice to journal for 10 minutes every morning, or meditate for 15 minutes before bed. By making it a habit, it becomes second nature, and you are more likely to stick to it.

You can also make time for reflection by taking a solo retreat, whether it be a weekend getaway, a day trip, or even just a solitary walk in nature. This gives you the time and space to focus on yourself and your thoughts, without the distractions of everyday life.

It is easier to make reflection a regular habit when you make yourself accountable for the process. You can join a training or a group with similar interests, such as a personal development or life coaching group. Or you can find a friend or a mentor, a person that you can share your reflections with, and who can hold you accountable and support you in your journey.

Finally, try to make it fun, enjoyable and relaxing. Light a candle, make yourself a cup of tea, or find a comfortable spot to sit. Make it an experience to look forward to rather than a chore. Give yourself permission to slow down and savor the process.

Making yourself accountable and having a support system in place can help to keep you on track, and provide you with a sense of motivation and encouragement. It can also be helpful to have someone to share your reflections with, who can offer a different perspective and provide valuable feedback.

Remember…

… this is your journey, so make it one that feels comfortable and authentic to you. Don’t be afraid to take your time and explore different paths, as you never know what may set your soul on fire. In the spirit of Carl Jung’s quote: Go out there and light up your world! Happy exploring!
